Regulatory Update丨WERCSmart Lithium Battery Registration Change

        Author:中認聯科 time:2022-01-10 Ctr:1932

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revised its regulations for the separate transport of lithium batteries, effective January 1, 2022. However, there will be a transition period to make adjustments to be 100% compliant with the new regulations by March 30, 2022. The customer is advised to check with the airline of their choice whether there is an implemented or actually permitted transition period.

        Influence

Changes in IATA Hazardous Goods Regulations that have had the greatest impact on WERCSmart registrations are the removal of Section II from Packing Instructions PI 965 and PI 968.

PI 965 is the Packing Instructions for Lithium Ion Cells and Batteries (including Power Banks) and PI 968 is the Packing Instructions for Lithium Metal/Primary Cells and Batteries.

This change does not affect Section II of PI 966, PI 967, PI 969 or PI 970 for lithium-containing battery products.

        Variety

Cells and batteries shipped separately may be packaged in accordance with Section IB of PI 965 and PI 968 as follows:

        1. The package weight of lithium-ion cells/batteries shall not exceed 10kg, or the package weight of lithium metal/primary cells/batteries shall not exceed 2.5kg.

        2. The label requirements on the package are as follows:

◆ Lithium Metal/Lithium Ion Batteries (subject to availability)*

◆ UN3090/UN3480 (as the case may be)*

◆ Shipper and Shipper's Name and Address*

◆ Class 9 Dangerous Goods - Lithium Battery Label

        ◆ Lithium battery operation label

        ◆ Freighter Shipping Labels Only

Note: When shipping multiple different packages, the net weight of the battery or cell must be marked on the package.

        3. Shipper declarations are to be filled out as fully regulated shipments, except adding "IB" after the PI number or in the Authorization column*

        4. Personnel transporting lithium batteries need to receive comprehensive dangerous goods training.

Note: * indicates a requirement for Section IB, but not for Section II. The above changes only apply if the carrier is a member of IATA.
